The reigning Sovereign holds the Royal Appointment of Captain General and, in this capacity, serves as ceremonial head of The Royal Regimental of Canadian Artillery. \u00a0From 1930, when HM King George V was pleased to accept it, until 1952, the appointment was titled Colonel-in-Chief.\u00a0 During a guest night at the Royal Artillery Mess at Woolwich in December 1950, His Majesty King George VI expressed a desire to change his title from Colonel-in-Chief to Captain General. This change was implemented on 26 January 1951, thus reviving a rank dating from the fifteenth century. The rank of Captain General had been replaced by that of Field Marshal in 1736 although it did not actually disappear from common usage until about 1799.\u00a0 The Royal Canadian Artillery requested that His Majesty change his Canadian title as he had done for the Royal Artillery, and on 10 January 1952, His Majesty became Captain General of The Royal Canadian Artillery. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was graciously pleased to assume the appointment upon her coronation in 1953.<\/p>\n

Appointed by the Minister of National Defence, on the recommendation of the Chief of the Defence Staff, the Colonel Commandant serves as honorary head of The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery.\u00a0 In this capacity, he guards the history, distinctions and customs of The Royal Regiment; promotes its identity, ethos and esprit de corps; and, upholds the unity of the Regimental Family \u2013 Regular & Reserve; Serving & Retired; Honoraries & Friends.\u00a0 The Colonel Commandant also:<\/p>\n
Incumbent<\/strong>: Brigadier-General (Ret\u2019d) D.A. Patterson MSM CD\u00a0<\/a>(2021 -)<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The highest-ranking Artillery General Officer currently serving in the Canadian Armed Forces is deemed the Senior Serving Gunner.\u00a0 In this capacity, he champions the professional interests of The Royal Regiment within the Canadian Armed Forces and advises on all matters of significance.\u00a0 The Senior Serving Gunner co-chairs Artillery Senate and chairs Artillery Council.<\/p>\n Incumbent<\/strong>: Brigadier-General S. Hunter OMM MSC MSM CD (2021 -)<\/p>\n <\/p>\n As \u201cBranch Advisor\u201d, the Director serves as the focal point for Royal Regiment identity and provides essential input to the maintenance of the good health of all artillery military occupations.<\/p>\n The Director reports directly to the Commander of the Canadian Army on matters related to force development, force employment, training and doctrine, professional standards, career patterns, trade specifications and structure.<\/p>\n While having overall responsibility for the Regiment, the Director is primarily focused on the operational aspects of The RCA Family Strategy \u2013 Lines of Operation 1 (Force Development and Employment) & 2 (Leadership Succession).<\/p>\n Incumbent<\/strong>: Colonel K.L.A. Bouckaert OMM CD (2021 -)<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Deputy Director RCA assists the Director of Artillery in the conduct of their duties as well as being the Commandant of the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery School.<\/p>\n Incumbent<\/strong>:\u00a0 Lieutenant-Colonel Yoann Leclerc-Desjardins CD (2023 – )<\/p>\n Pa<\/strong>st Deputy Director RCA:\u00a0 <\/strong>Lieutenant-Colonel J.A. Phillips MMM CD (2021 – 2023)<\/p>\n The Deputy Director RCA (Reserve) assists the Director RCA in the conduct of their duties.<\/p>\n Incumbent<\/strong>: Lieutenant-Colonel K. Currie CD (2023 -)<\/p>\n Past Deputy Director RCA (Reserve):<\/strong> Lieutenant-Colonel M.P.C. B\u00e9rub\u00e9 CD (2020 – 2023)<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Director RCA (NCM) works with Canadian Army Talent Management and RSM RCA to improve RCA NCM succession planning at TSM and above.\u00a0 This includes communicating with our members, understanding their career goals, and ensuring educational and second language abilities required for progression are not an afterthought.\u00a0 They work in concert with the RSM RCA, COs, RSMs, Tier 1-3 RCA Command CWOs and the NCM Career Managers to ensure the RCA is competitive in the future for the RSM appointments both within and outside of RCA units with room to grow into Tier 1-3 Command CWOs above unit RSM.\u00a0 Director RCA (NCM) will also chair the NCM Career Boards and work with the Director of Artillery and NCM Career Manager on all matters pertaining to RCA NCM staffing, training and career development.<\/p>\n Incumbent<\/strong>: Colonel S.A. Heer MSM CD (2022 – )<\/p>\n Pa<\/strong>st Director RCA (NCM):<\/strong> Colonel J.S. Dubois MSM CD (2020 – 2022)<\/p>\n The Regimental Colonel\u2019s primary responsibility is to provide leadership for Lines of Operation 3 to 5 (Nurturing the Regimental Family institution; Connecting with Canadians; and, Celebrating our Heritage) of The RCA Family Strategy while recognizing that the Director of Artillery remains primus inter pares<\/em>, and is the primary interlocutor with the Army Staff.<\/p>\n In exercising his functions, the Regimental Colonel is responsible to the Artillery Senate, is responsive to the Colonel Commandant, and coordinates his efforts with those of the Director and the RCAA. Given the nature of Lines of Operations 3 to 5 issues, the Regimental Colonel remains mindful of the support stakeholders such as Honoraries, retired members and others can bring to bear in advancing issues.<\/p>\n\n
