Order of Canada

Companions of the Order of Canada (post-nominals: CC) have demonstrated the highest degree of merit to Canada and humanity, on either the national or international scene. Up to 15 Companions are appointed annually, with an imposed limit of 165 living Companions at any given time, not including those appointed as extraordinary Companions or in an honorary capacity. Substantive members are the only regular citizens who are empowered to administer the Canadian Oath of Citizenship.

Colonel The Right Honourable Robert George Brian Dickson PC CC KStJ CD

From the beaches of Normandy, where he was seriously wounded to the echelons of the Supreme Court of Canada, where he served as Chief Justice, he has dedicated a lifetime to his country. A champion of legal rights, he made ground-breaking judgements concerning the application of the 1982 Charter of Rights and Freedoms which have set the tone for future constitutional rulings. A committed Red Cross volunteer for many years, he has given countless personal hours to various humanitarian causes.

Former Prime Minister of Ontario; Leader of the Conservative party of Canada; Canadian High Commissioner in the United Kingdom. For services in government.

Captain The Right Honourable Joseph Antonio Charles Lamer PC CC CD

He has had a major influence on the evolution of justice. Driven by an exceptional level of energy and enthusiasm, he made his mark early, first as a judge in Quebec, then as Chairman of the Law Reform Commission of Canada, where he had a hand in court reform in Canada and several other countries. As Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, he distinguished himself through his efforts to strengthen judicial impartiality and independence. He is also known as a man of vision, an administrator beyond compare and a great defender of individual freedoms, rights of the accused and minorities.

Throughout his distinguished career, whether as a lawyer, professor, advisor or judge, he has served the legal profession and his country with utmost dedication, integrity and loyalty. Recently retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, he has been one of Canada’s leading advocates in constitutional matters and has made an impressive contribution to the administration of justice in Canada.

Throughout his illustrious career, he held a variety of appointments in Canada and abroad, including commander of the United Nations Missions to Uganda and Rwanda where he displayed exceptional professionalism and superb leadership. Now retired, he has accepted new challenges as special advisor to the Canadian International Development Agency on matters relating to war-affected children. He is also a dynamic and eloquent speaker on matters relating to post-traumatic stress. Courageous and caring, he continues his exemplary service to his country and to humanity.

Brigadier The Honourable Charles Mills Drury PC OC CBE DSO QC

Following a distinguished military career and an appointment to UNRRA, he occupied important posts in the Public Service. Later he became a Member of Parliament and held several senior Cabinet portfolios. As Chairman of the National Capital Commission and former member of the Northwest Territories Council, he continues his faithful service to his country.

Always concerned for the well-being of her fellow citizens, she has served them in a number of capacities. She has done so as the Mayor of Rocky Mountain House, as a Member of the Alberta Legislature and as the province’s twelfth Lieutenant Governor. In addition, she has contributed to Canadian society as a dedicated volunteer with numerous organizations.
Honorary Colonel The Honourable Lieutenant Helen Hunley served in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps during World War II and was appointed Honorary Colonel 20th Field Artillery Regiment, RCA.

Honorary Colonel (Lieutenant-Governor) Lieutenant William Ross Macdonald PC OC CD QC

Former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. Lawyer, Parliamentarian and Senator. In recognition of his many contributions to public life and community affairs.
Lieutenant William Ross Macdonald served with the 2nd Cycle Corps and the 2nd Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force during World War I. In 1959 he was appointed the Honorary Colonel 56th Field Regiment, RCA.

Now a retired Justice of the Ontario Court of Justice, he has distinguished himself in the law, in politics, as a historian, and as a soldier throughout a career spanning more than fifty years. His heraldic expertise and the high regard in which he is held, were important factors leading to the adoption of the maple leaf as the symbol for our country’s flag.

A popular sports personality in Canada and abroad, Ben Weider has achieved excellence as a businessman and philanthropist. He is a leading international manufacturer and marketer of home fitness equipment, renowned for his generous support of various youth organizations. He has donated complete training gyms to sports research and training institutions in numerous countries. Moreover, in 1994, he launched the Ben Weider Children’s Foundation, which buys new teaching materials and helps students with tuition fees. His ongoing involvement in charity work and his efforts in educating people about the positive benefits of physical fitness have earned him honours worldwide. This is a promotion within the Order.

Brigadier Maurice G Archer CM MBE

Following a brilliant career in the military and in the field of engineering, he distinguished himself by his arduous work and unswerving dedication to public affairs. A former Chairman of the National Harbours Board, he also served as Vice-President of Canadian National Railways and of Metric Commission Canada. Now retired, he devotes his time and energy to many voluntary activities.
Brigadier Maurice G Archer served during the Second World War with the 4th Medium Regiment, RCA, CASF. He was the President of The Royal Canadian Artillery Association in 1954.

Brigadier George Edwin (Ted) Beament CM OBE GCStJ ED CD QC

This respected Ottawa lawyer has held many positions of national prominence as well as being an ardent supporter of numerous charitable organizations. For some thirty years, he has rendered invaluable services to the Order of St. John of Jerusalem and was elected Chancellor of the Priory of Canada.
Brigadier George Edwin (Ted) Beament was a member of the 30th Field Regiment, CFA, NPAM and the  25th Field Battery, RCA, NPAM. He served during the Second World War with 2nd Field Battery, RCA, CASF and the Headquarters, First Canadian Army, CASF. He was the Commandant, President, Khaki University of Canada and was later appointed Honorary Colonel, 30th Field Regiment, RCA.

Major Clifford Albert Victor Barker CM CD DVM

Having established the first professional course in artificial breeding in North America at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, Ontario, he became internationally known for his pioneering research in the fields of animal reproduction and artificial insemination which revolutionized farming methods around the world.

Captain George Gideon Blackburn CM MC

He has had a multifaceted career as an award-winning playwright and script writer, radio producer, public servant and author. In recent years, he has gained extensive recognition for his books based on his experiences as an artillery officer in the Second World War. This trilogy, which has garnered tremendous respect and numerous awards, has been hailed as some of the finest literature in print about the reality of Canadians at war. Director of the Canadian Battle of Normandy Federation, he also remains active with many community and military-oriented organizations.

Colonel Arthur Britton Smith CM MC CD QC

Throughout his lifetime, Britton Smith has demonstrated exemplary qualities of leadership and vision. A native of Kingston, Ontario, he practiced law before developing one of the most successful rental organizations in the country. Esteemed for his philanthropy, he has helped grow his community through generous donations from his eponymous foundation, benefiting the social, economic and cultural fabric of the city. A decorated Second World War soldier and recipient of the Military Cross, he is also a passionate local historian and has written extensively on HMS Ontario, a military brig lost in 1780.
Colonel Arthur Britton Smith served with the 8th Field Regiment, RCA, CASF and the 4th Field Regiment, RCA, CASF during the Second World War. After the war, he joined the with the Princess of Wales Own Regiment (PWOR) as a company commander and later served as the Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel and Honorary Colonel of that Regiment.

Colonel Eric Wyld Cormack CM OBE ED CD

In recognition of many years of service to agricultural education, military and Indian affairs and community endeavours in Alberta and, with his wife, to retarded children. He assisted in founding the Canadian, Alberta, Edmonton and Strathcona County Association for the Mentally Retarded.

Colonel Gerard Francis Dufresne CM ED CD

Businessman from Shawinigan. In recognition of his active involvement in community charities.
Colonel Gerard Francis Dufresne enlisted with the Régiment de Joliette, NPAM and served with the Régiment des Fusiliers Mont-Royal, CASF during the Second World War. He later served as the Commanding Officer of the 62nd Field Artillery Regiment, RCA and Honorary Colonel.

Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel Irene d’Entremont CM ONS

A businesswoman of long standing, she is the cornerstone of her community. Currently the founding president of M.I.T. Electronics Inc., she was one of the first women in her region to work in business. Her perspicacity and strong business instincts have also benefited the community through her many volunteer commitments. The Yarmouth YMCA has expanded greatly under her leadership. In addition, she has been sought after for her vision and judgment by many institutions, including the Law Commission of Canada.

Honorary Lieutenant Colonel Senator the Honourable Joyce Fairbairn PC CM

Joyce Fairbairn is devoted to improving the lives of Canadians and helping individuals overcome obstacles. A former journalist, political advisor and senator, she was best known as an advocate for literacy and for the Paralympic movement, as well as for her work with Aboriginal people. Throughout her distinguished career, she showed limitless enthusiasm for her home province and was a visible presence in Alberta where she supported the people and organizations that meant so much to her.

Colonel Conrad Fetherstonhaugh Harrington CM CD

Former Chancellor of McGill University and widely known and respected as an outstanding senior member of the Canadian business community, he has served his country with distinction both through his military career and his devotion to a large variety of charitable causes.

Captain Edward John Hughes CM OBC

He captures the essence of British Columbia in his paintings. One of Canada’s pre-eminent artists, he has put to canvas his deeply felt connection to the land and its people for more than six decades. His carefully studied sketches and distinctive oil and watercolour paintings portray the beauty and unique character of his province. Also recognized for his printmaking and for his efforts as a war artist, he has exhibited his works in private and public galleries as well as museums across Canada.
Captain Edward John Hughes enrolled with 31st Heavy Battery, 15th (Vancouver) Coast Brigade, RCA CASF at the beginning of the Second World War and then was transferred as a war artist to the Canadian Historical Division.

Major Tetsuo Ted Itani CM OMM CD

For his contributions to global humanitarian and disaster relief operations, and for his leadership in peacekeeping as a practitioner, advisor and educator.
Ted Itani is a role model of service to people in crisis around the world. Following a distinguished military career, he became an advisor to the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre, where he drew on his own experiences to help design peacekeeping training courses conducted by the centre around the world. A committed humanitarian, he led responses to major natural disasters, including the earthquakes and floods that ravaged Pakistan in the last decade. He is also a senior volunteer with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
