Gunner History – 12th Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery, CASF

The 12th Field Regiment was comprised of the 11th Field Battery from Hamilton, Ont., the 16th Field Battery and the 43rd Field Battery from Guelph, Ont. and the 69th Field Battery from Brantford, Ont. The 69th Battery was later moved to the 4th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment. The Regiment departed Canada July 1941 and joined 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. Many months of training and deployments throughout England ended when they landed in Normandy on D-Day, firing their 105mm Priests from onboard their landing crafts in support of 7th Brigade’s assault. The self-propelled howitzers were exchanged for towed 25 pounders in August 1944. The unit was disbanded 31 October 1945.
Into Action with the 12th Field 1940-1945 was written by Captain Thomas Johnston Bell MC. The 12th Field Regiment Association is currently working on an updated edition. The Association also has a website located at 12th Field Regiment Royal Canadian Artillery 1940-1945
